Not for Everyone is a portrait series for Dr. Martens about people who dress for themselves first and for everybody else second. Instead of working with agencies, we cast through friends, recommendations and people we met on the street in Valencia and Madrid, looking for faces and attitudes rather than a specific look. Every subject came with their own clothes and their own stories, and the boots were the only thing they all had in common.
We shot everyone in the same concrete corner of a studio, with one hard light and no styling notes, and let each person decide how to stand, where to look and how long to hold a pose. Tattoos, worn denim, oversized trousers and silver chains became the uniform of the series without anyone planning it. The final selection was shown as large black-and-white and colour prints in a pop-up space during the launch week, with each portrait accompanied by a short quote from the person in the photograph.
